Publications of FYROM media are a provocation
Vaptsarov is known as a Bulgarian poet around the world
According to Evgeni Kirilov MEP, member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D), the publications of FYROM media on the eve of the conference devoted to the 70 years of the assassination of poet Nikola Vaptsarov were a provocation.
Kirilov organised an event at the European Parliament today in order to contribute to remembering the creative work and poetry of Vaptsarov, as well as to also bring into the present problems which were described by the poet, but are also live today, for example the universal message of freedom, social justice and humanity.
According to the MEP, the ideas expressed in the work of Vaptsarov were alive today, especially with the current crisis on-going and topics such as social exclusion; rise of unemployment and general mood among the people of labour.
The conference was attended, among other, by heirs of Vaptsarov, the Head of the Bulgarian S&D delegation, MEP Ivailo Kalfin, as well as by Manuel Munos Hidalgo, a Spanish writer who wrote a play on Vaptsarov and won the Nikola Vaptsarov International Award for Literature for his complete works in 2010, thus becoming the first Spanish to receive it.
In Kirilov’s words, the publications of FYROM media, describing the very conference as a ‘provocation’, were not worth commenting and were another example of how far ‘brazen nationalism could possibly go’.
Kirilov said that Vaptsarov was very well known around the world and he was known as aBulgarian poet. In addition, the MEP stressed that whatever the cause he died for was, one had to always respect those who believed in a certain cause and were ready to give their life for it.
In relation to the mentioning of Spaska Mitrova, a FYROM citizen of Bulgarian ethnicity who had been convicted in a civil dispute with her ex-husband, in the materials of FYROM media, Kirilov reiterated that she has never worked for him or been his assistant. In his words, he only tried to defend her when she was maltreated in court and by the police in FYROM. He named the publications as ‘some sort of insinuation proving that things are rather hasty on behalf of some journalists in FYROM’.
In Kirilov’s opinion, the event was a huge success because it brought a lot of young people and attracted a good deal of attention within the S&D group and on behalf of other MEPs.
Last but not least, Evgeni Kirilov said that European standards on good neighbourly relationsrequired both sides to ‘play’ in accordance with them and expressed hope that FYROM’s adjustment to them would be in interest of its relations with both Bulgaria and Greece. new europe on line
