Erdogan: Merkel didn’t support Cyprus entry

On 31 October, Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel didn’t support Cyprus accession to the EU.
The words of the Turkish Prime Minister came as a surprise for Merkel, who nevertheless didn’t make any comment. According to Spiegel, Erdogan’s claim is not true while German government sources said that the Chancellor was referring to the EU’s general principle that it should accept members which don’t have territorial conflicts with neighbours. Erdogan commented about Cyprus entry, “this was a serious mistake and the mistake continues with increasing effects.”
Regarding Turkey’s accession to the European Union, Erdogan implied for the first time a specific deadline in country’s accession. Following a question regarding Turkey’s fully membership in the Union by 2023 Prime Minister commented, “they won’t keep us waiting that long, will they...if they did then the EU will lose, at least it will lose Turkey.”
In addition he expressed his dissatisfaction about the lack of progress in the integration process, saying that Europe is engaging in delaying tactics. Merkel replied to the comments stressing, “the EU is an honest negotiating partner…these negotiations will continue irrespective of the questions that we have to clarify.”
Regarding Syria, Merkel urged Turkey to restraint in response to Syrian fires in the borders but promised humanitarian aid for the refugee camps. However, Turkey seems to ask a multilateral agreement for a military intervention in the country.
On 22 October, Selim Yenel, Turkey’s ambassador to the EU said, “Our red lines on Syria have been crossed already…as long as the UN Security Council is stuck with the Russian and Chinese vetoes, we can’t do anything. That’s the problem.”
Merkel promised to visit Turkey on 2013.
