Ex-Greek finance minister to be investigated over tax charges

The former Greek finance minister is to face an investigation over allegations of removing names from a list of tax evaders.
MPs voted on 17 January to launch a criminal investigation into ex-finance minister, George Papaconstantinou, after he was accused of removing the names of three relatives, each with Swiss bank accounts, from a list of tax evaders.
The list contains the names of around 2,000 Greek citizens who have Swiss bank accounts and are believed to have evaded income tax. The list was presented to the then-Socialist government in 2010 by French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, who is nor head of the IMF.
The government at the time did not act upon it at the time, however it re-emerged as an issue after it was later published by an investigative journalist, apparently with modifications from the original.
Separately, the parliament rejected launching investigations into another former finance minister, Evangelos Venizelos, as well as former prime ministers George Papandreou and Lucas Papademos.  new europe on line
